Business Manager Christopher Erikson, with the approval of the membership at its July 2010 meeting, appointed John Baker a business representative. Brother Baker will be representing the “M” Division.
Brother Baker was initiated into Local 3 in January 1982. He received his “A” journeyman's card in 1987 after completing the “A” Apprentice Training Program. He has worked as a journeyman, sub-foreman, foreman and general foreman. At the time of his appointment, he was the shop steward at Madison Square Garden.
He was a sub-foreman for S&V Electric at the Shore Towers in Astoria, Queens; a sub-foreman for Hugh O’Kane at the American Airlines Terminal at JFK Airport; a sub-foreman for 5 Star Electric at the Williamsburg Savings Bank in Brooklyn and a general foreman for Shelden Electric at the Chrysler Building on 42nd Street in Manhattan.
The son of Local 3 member Joseph Baker, his uncle was James Baker, a former executive board member of Local 3.
John is a graduate of the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies where he received an associate’s degree from Empire State College (SUNY) in labor studies. A native son of Electchester Housing, he was born in Jamaica, Queens and graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Elementary School and Holy Cross High School. He also holds an associate degree in criminal justice from St. John’s University.
He served on the Wage & Policy Committee and as the president of the Sportsmen’s Club from 2005 to the present.
Married to Helen Wickes, he and Helen reside in Lynbrook, L.I. and are the proud parents of Timothy, 21 years of age, a student at Hunter College, Shannon, age 16 and Connor age 14, both students at Lynbrook High School.
