Making Strides against Breast Cancer participants at Jones Beach State Park.
On a bright cold Sunday morning, of October 18, 2014 at 7:00 am the 419 Spartan Club of Local 3, IBEW for the second year in a row participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” at Jones Beach State Park. The members of the 419 Spartan Club along with their family members felt very fortunate and privileged to be a part of the fight against Breast Cancer. We all believe in helping and supporting the American Cancer Society on their quest to continue to save and prevent women and men from this debilitating and possibly terminal disease. The proceeds that were raised will enable the American Cancer Society to continue to fund ground-breaking research to understand, prevent and treat breast cancer. It would also help provide comprehensive support to patients, survivors, caregivers and provide access to mammograms to women who could not å_afford the procedure.
We were honored to be a group among thousands of participants marching with all the same goal and dream. All marching å_toward the ending of the disease or immensely reducing the amount of women and men inflicted with breast cancer. According to the American Society Surveillance Services Research, in 2015, there will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed and 589,430 deaths in the US.
Also in 2015 there will be an estimated 60,290 new cases of breast carcinoma in situ, 83% of which will be ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and 12% lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). Breast cancer incidence rates are highest in non-Hispanic white women, followed by African American women and is lowest among Asian/Pacific Islander å_women. In contrast, breast cancer death rates are highest for African-American å_women followed by non-Hispanic white women.(Please note that breast cancer incidence and death rates vary state by state.)
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks enables you to be a part of the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, bringing together almost 300 communities with a similar goal in helping the fight against breast cancer. As we marched along and talked with our members and other team members on a cold, freezing morning, we all realized that all of us in one way or another have been touched by this disease. Sharing these stories as we walk together inspire and push us forward to continue to participate in events such as this one. Also knowing that our efforts are really to support the real heroes of this event, those that have been afflicted, the survivors and those who have lost loved ones to this devastating illness. In total, there were 1,654 teams and 11,055 participants who helped raise $1,822,516.98.
Leading the 419 Spartan Club, officers and members was President Angel Corchado and Business Representative Annette Diaz. We believe by participating in these charitable events we can inspire our members and our youth to continue the fight in community affairs and the labor movement.
