A Message from Business Manager Chris Erikson
Happy Labor Day, brothers and sisters! Enjoy the day and time with your families, but take a moment to reflect on how lucky we really are to be members of this great union. So many are less fortunate than us. Harry Van Arsdale Jr., speaking at Cooper Union in 1962, explained that if he had to describe the “goals of Labor,” he would sum it up simply as achieving a better life. We’ve reached that goal 10 times over.
We are the working class and always will be the working class. We work hard and earn every nickel that we make. Fortunately, we remain part of the middle class in America, but this is a middle class that is dwindling, as income inequality grows in our country. This wasn’t always the case. Workers struggled and fought hard to make the gains that we enjoy today.
So take some time to dwell on how lucky we really are, how we got here, and what it’s going to take to stay here. As our founders and those who came before us did, we need to commit to continuing the fight for future generations of Local 3 members. Do your part to Keep The Union Strong. Happy Labor Day, sisters and brothers.
