September 11, 2001 - September 11, 2026
On the morning of September 11, 2001, union members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 3 and Local 1212 were working inside the World Trade Center. Some were stationed on the 95th and 105th floors of the North Tower, the 90th and 105th floors of the South Tower, and in the basement of the World Trade Center. When the towers collapsed, Local 3 lost 17 brothers and Local 1212 lost 4 brothers.
During the months-long rescue and recovery period, members of Local 3 worked at Ground Zero installing temporary lighting for nighttime search efforts. Additionally, Local 3’s Sword of Light Pipes and Drums Band performed at funeral services for construction workers and first responders who lost their lives on that fateful day.
More than 350 members of Local 3 worked on the construction of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in downtown Manhattan.
“The IBEW was there when the towers fell,” Local 3 member Dennis Moran said. “And we were there to build it back up.”
Since September 11, 2001, Local 3 has lost 34 members to 9/11-related illnesses, and many others continue to deal with the effects. Please keep these members and their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers, as we vow to never forget.
