Queens is famously known as the “World’s Borough,” and now it is becoming the “City of the Future,” according to industry insiders and local leaders at the “Building Queens” Conference held on September 15th in Long Island City. Organized by the Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC), the conference featured keynote speakers, panels, and networking opportunities between developers, elected officials, residents, employers, and unions. Queens Construction Business Representative Dave Sands represented Local 3, IBEW on a panel aptly titled “How Queens Builds,” where he was able to promote the professionalism, safety, and world-class training that the union and its members bring to any project.
Public and private entities have announced over $62 billion of recent or planned investments into Queens, including new housing, subway stations, airports, casinos, both airports (JFK International and LaGuardia), and the first soccer-specific stadium in the city’s history. Altogether, that translates into tens of thousands of good-paying, union jobs in the borough that Local 3 calls home.
