John Crowley
Former Business Representative John Crowley passed away on June 10, 2016. Initiated into Local 3 on December 1, 1955, Crowley served a five-year apprenticeship in the “A” Construction Division and became an “A” Journeyman electrician in 1960. He was appointed to the staff of Local 3 in 1975. Upon appointment, he was assigned to the emerging X-Ray and Technicians Divisions of Local 3. This was a natural assignment as Crowley was active in the organizing work which was going on at the time in the industry.
His organizing activities resulted in the signing of Picker X-Ray, Siemens X-Ray, North American Philips, Profexray, Searl Nuclear, Burroughs Corporation and other firms employing highly-trained technicians.
In 1984, with the retirement of Business Representative William Gillin, Crowley was appointed to take over the responsibilities of the Telephone Division. In 1989, these responsibilities were transferred to Business Representative Howard Cohen.
With the retirement of Business Representative James McCarren, he was appointed the responsibilities of Brooklyn Union Gas and Consolidated Edison Company of N.Y., he also serviced Electric Sign shops, General Electric Consumer and General Electric Apparatus Divisions.
Crowley retired from Local 3 on February 1, 1997. A former Marine Sergeant during the Korean War, Crowley, a second generation Local 3 member, has been an active trade unionist since his early days in Local 3. He was also active in his community affairs and on the political scene in New Jersey where he lived.
