Local 3’s very own Allison Ziogas has declared her candidacy for Congress in New York’s 11th District, which includes all of Staten Island and parts of south Brooklyn. She will be challenging the incumbent Republican Congresswoman, Nicole Malliotakis, who has a poor record on the IBEW’s top concerns, but first she has to secure her ballot access and nomination in the Democratic primary. The primary election will be held on June 23rd and early voting on June 13th-21st.
Ziogas is an ‘A’ journeywoman, foreman, and graduate of Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW). She currently works as the director of labor relations for offshore wind developer Ørsted and recently negotiated a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU). At her public announcement on Tuesday, March 10th, outside Local 3’s office on Staten Island, Ziogas said, “In a Congress that’s full of lawyers and career politicians, I think it’s time that we had a worker who knows that the middle class isn’t built from the top down, but from the ground up by working people.”
Local 3 Business Manager Chris Erikson Jr. said, “Allison has been a member of Local 3 for 20 years but has always been a tireless advocate for working people. From starting as a labor organizer to joining Local 3’s Apprenticeship to becoming a Journeywoman Electrician, Allison doesn’t just believe in Labor’s values but lives them every day. Family sustaining wages and benefits, respect and a voice in the workplace, a secure retirement and solidarity with everyone who works for a living. I know Allison, and I know she will be an effective and tireless fighter for working families. She knows that collective bargaining agreements and union membership are the best weapons in the affordability crisis fight and the strongest antidote to income inequality. She knows America needs secure energy independence and she knows what it takes to build it. Allison is our Union sister and we look forward to helping send her to Congress”.
