This Wednesday, May 14th, dozens of Local 3 members led by Queens Business Representative Dave Sands will be traveling up to Albany to support the Metropolitan Park project. The $8 billion gaming, hotel, entertainment, and green space project slated for construction on 50 acres of asphalt parking lots at Citi Field will transform this corner of Queens and bring tens of thousands of union jobs both in the short and long term. It is one of several proposed projects aiming for a downstate gaming license. But in order for the project to progress through the process, legislation needs to pass in the State Legislature before the current session ends to change the allowable use of the land for this project.
State Senator John Liu has introduced S7121A, and along with Assemblywoman Larinda Hooks' A6781B, these bills would sufficiently address the issue and keep the Metropolitan Park project on the tracks toward becoming a reality. Local 3 members will be in Albany on Wednesday, meeting with key Senators and holding a rally in support of this massive union project.
