NYC Comptroller Mark Levine, who entered office at the start of 2026, recently announced a historic investment by the city’s largest public pension funds into the AFL-CIO’s Housing Investment Trust (HIT). The New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS), teachers’, police, and firefighters’ pension funds have collectively committed $300 million, making them the AFL-CIO HIT’s largest investors.

For over 40 years, the AFL-CIO HIT has invested in affordable housing and large residential projects with 100% on-site union labor, while providing returns for pension, health, and welfare funds. The AFL-CIO HIT has supported significant work and upgrades in Electchester and throughout the five boroughs, such as the recently completed and fully union-built project, the Ellery, on West 43rd Street. It has helped create or preserve more than 40,000 units in New York City, and approximately 10,000 more units are expected in the years following this most recent investment.
